Harry Potter Actor Says Adult Fans Of The Series Need To "Grow Up"

"If your balls have dropped, then it's time to forget about it. You know, go on to other things."

Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films, has a message for adult fans of the Harry Potter series--grow up. Speaking to Australia's ABC News, Margolyes doubled down on her previous comments about Harry Potter, saying people should just move on to something else.

"I'm not unhappy about it. I just think it's for children. And if your balls have dropped, then it's time to forget about it," she said. "You know, go on to other things. No. Seriously. It's a great series. It's a wonderful set of films. I'm proud I was in it. But it was 25 years ago! You know, grow up!"

Margolyes was asked about this in response to her previous comments about the series that went viral when she said she worries for adult Harry Potter fans because "they should be over that by now."

In the ABC News interview, Margolyes suggested adult Harry Potter fans should read Charles Dickens instead. Here's the segment from the interview:

The mainline Harry Potter movie series ended in 2011 with The Deathly Hallows Part II. The spin-off series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them premiered in 2016 and spawned two sequels, but the film franchise is now on hold.

In a bid to focus on its biggest franchises, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced plans for a Harry Potter TV series on Max to come in 2026. Author J.K Rowling is involved with the TV series as an executive producer. She continues to face criticism and controversy over comments about transgender issues.

The untitled Harry Potter series is described as a "faithful adaptation" of the books. WBD said it is planning a "decade-long" series featuring "a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom."

"Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world," WBD said. It was previously reported that there would be seven seasons, each adapting one of the books.

@esqueejy: I'm actually excited for this, the books always felt like they would be better served as a tv series instead of a movie series. Each book being one season would be fantastic. The movies always felt underwhelming to me, so this is a chance to get it right.

If she's talking about adults still trying to make Harry Potter part of their identity, then I agree with her, but I also don't want to forget Harry Potter. If somebody made a really good Harry Potter video game I'd be interested, because I've got lots of nostalgia for the franchise, but I'm not champing at the bit for more Harry Potter (partly because I'm an adult and partly because they Rise of Skywalker'd it with those Fantastic Beasts movies).

I still like re-reading the books every few years, or watching a couple of the movies during the holidays. It'd also be OK if nobody made any new Harry Potter media and we just let the original series become a classic in peace and leave the super fandom to the next generation of kids.

@mogan: yea seriously its literally like the only most well known and beloved classic thru the ages book series we've had in decades.. they don't need to ruin it by adding more to it and I agree about the identity part people are super possessive of the franchise and they wanna enjoy it their way with their worldview rather than take the timeless story for what it is

Why would we "forget" about something that was part of our childhood? I think there is nothing wrong with the occasional re-watch of the movies or re-read of the books at all. I also hardly think the final 3-4 books are only directed at children measured by the amount of characters fighting for their life and being killed. It does get pretty dark especially at the end. Sounds more like she wants to move on and is frustrated that people are still asking her about this role and not other more recent ones. Like a Steven Ogg/Trevor type of situation.

Slow news day, I guess?

Anyway, all things in moderation. You can like Harry Potter as an adult and that's fine. However if you're obsessed about it as an adult then maybe find something better.

Also, keep in mind she is probably getting some attention from the diehard fans; in other words, she is likely seeing the 5% of the fans that are the worst and most fanatical and not the 95% that are moderate and reasonable.

The kind of fans that wait anxiously for a Reddit AMA with some random actress that had a 5-minute role in the films only to ask her some really obscure question about the lore, and not the fans that are like "Hey, Harry Potter is fun."

@mrbojangles25: She is like 80 or 90 yrs old. Probably just at an age where having a polite social filter, no longer exists. God, I cannot wait!, till I am that old.

Agree, middle age men and women coming up to her, to show her really bad HP tattoos on their bodies.... that they got last month.

And not, parents that share HP with their own kids.

The way to do this is to follow the Disney Star Wars model. Make it so bad the adult fans jump ship.

I kind of agree, I mean we have 35 yr olds who name the Hogwarts House they wish they were from, on their linkedin profile. And dating profiles... Time to put down that ebay larch wood, an unicorn hair, wand. (made in china). And maybe read a book series, that you can discuss with other adults, at a business dinner or dinner party.

And NO, Quidditch is a stupid game, with stupid rules, that are impossible to have in any sport... real or make believe. Let the flames begin.

@jenovaschilld: Agreed. I have no issue with fandoms, I am a massive Whovian, but even I know that there is a line between fandom and downright obsessiveness. If you're in your 30s and pretending to be a wizard, I think you need to get some help.

@redviperofdorne: I have no problem pretending your a wizard in your middle age... cough cough my weekly D&D game, but there is a line of ones identity vs an enthusiast love of fiction. I am thinking the Jim Carrie, 'Yes Man' movie, where his coworker invites him to a Harry Potter marathon/costume party... which is fine I guess, vs middle aged parents spending a couple thousand on HP tattoos, while their kids sleep on mattresses on the floor.

Though, bad HP tattoo videos on YT is so entertaining.

Looks like loads of people in the comments don't know who Miriam is lol... she's a UK national treasure, funny as hell, and incredibly nonchalant about voicing her opinions and thoughts.

Cease the butthurt without context, and understand where she's coming from - she doesn't care about HP, the same way Sir Alex Guiness cared little for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi.

@OnettRage: I think this might be one of those, 'The headline makes it look worse than it is' situations. In context, she's not saying anything crazy.

Man, this actor needs to step away from interviews and social media if they don't want to sound even more stupid...

And it wouldn't be a HP article without that laughable "opinion" article about JKR, eh?

You can make the same exact argument about any series that has stood the test of time. Star Wars, LOTR, James Bond, Sherlock Holmes. Normal people don't just discard their beloved franchises forever and move on to the next thing. We simply add to the list of franchises that we enjoy, and from time to time like to revisit the old favorites.

People who tell you to "grow up" for enjoying a piece of media are the ones who need to look within and ask themselves "why does it bother me that this series continues to bring people joy after all these years?" My guess is that this lady is bitter, because she got a grand total of maybe two minutes of screen time in all eight movies combined.

I get that she's old and doesn't realize how what she's saying is wrong, but she's still wrong. The things people like, enjoy, and cherish aren't a measure of maturity. If anything, acceptance and respect for the things others enjoy is a greater measure of maturity.

She encourages people to enjoy the works of Charles Dickens instead, seemingly unware of the hypocrisy of her words. I doubt she'd appreciate it if I told her that it's time to move on from his works. After all, while they were great and generally considered literary classics by this points, it's been 150 years! "It's time to move on!" as she said. Of course, that's a really stupid argument to make because there's really nothing wrong with people enjoying his works for their entire lives. I just wish she could see her hypocrisy in saying that others need to stop enjoying something they've enjoyed their entire lives.

Oh look. Another a-hole who thinks they can gatekeep who can and can't like something. Sounds like she's the one who hasn't grown up.

I'm not a fan of Harry Potter, by the way. I'm just sick of people like her. I see this crap all the time, especially among gamers.

@gamerboy100: She's the embodiment of the "stop having fun" meme. Some people just hate it when others have something they're passionate about. They want everyone to be as miserable as themselves.

Should I stop wearing my Hogwarts Uniform and playing Quidditch? Are we at least allowed to still like books and movies and maybe revisit them from time to time? I'm not sure how to follow this advice!

@willhouse4: I think it's more for the fanboys that are still obsessed and making liking a thing part of their identity.

The kind of fans of things like Star Wars that'll harass actors/actresses because of a role they played.

@gamingkoala: She didn't specify that she was talking about some unhinged harassers. She said that fans in general need to move on. I didn't realize there was a time limit that I'm allowed to enjoy a piece of media.
